Gasoline prices hit near-record levels recently, and the government says the average will stay above $3 all summer, sending motorists shopping for lower-price fuel and making them wonder if they're hurting their engines burning the cheap stuff.

Whew, gas prices are high. Higher than they've ever been. During the week of May 21, the Lundberg Survey, a gas price tracking service, put the average cost of a gallon of unleaded at $3.18. Adjusted for inflation, that topped the 1981 price spike that had held the record for 26 years.

Charrette recently started cycling to work a few times per week. At age 50 and admittedly out of shape, her main reason was exercise. She also wanted to save money on gas and do something for the environment.

Instead of all these power tuning articles it is refreshing to find one that tells us how we can easily make our cars use less gas - especially with the rising cost of pump fuel without resorting to major engine work.

What is aerogel? Well, probably the strongest "gas" you'll ever see. With a density of 90 - 99.8% air, it is the thinest "hard" material. Made of various carbons and silicas, it can sustain up to 2000 times it's own weight. A new, not yet published recipe of aerogel is reported to sustain 100,000 it's own weight.

New research has shown that saving trees could slow the onset of climate change. According UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, nearly 33 million acres of forestland is felled around the world each year, accounting for approximately 1.5 billion metric tons of carbon to the atmosphere, or 20 percent of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

With the price of gasoline hovering at record levels, ideas are proliferating about how to maximize miles per gallon. The Internet is full of unproven ideas such as adding a few ounces of acetone yes, nail polish remover to the fuel tank. Depending on whom you believe, it will either make the family buggy more efficient or potentially do harm.

It seems that everyday the price of fuel is hitting an all-time high. As of this week, the national average price for a gallon of gasoline is around $3.21, and in many parts of the country it is well above this figure. So are Americans changing their driving habits to avoid paying so much at the pump?

The national average for gas is just over $3.19 per gallon, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report -- up 34 cents from last month and above the Energy Information Association's record last week of $3.10 per gallon. Both prices top the former record of $3.07 set on Sept. 5, 2005, after Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast.
